AUTH Workshop

Aristotle University of Thessaloniki hosted the fourth NextMGT Workshop on Micro Gas Turbine System Component Design and Analysis in Greece between the 7th and the 9th of September 2022. Twenty members of the consortium were present where interactive talks were delivered by researchers both in-person and some that joined online. The event also had great occasions for networking including lunches and dinners. For full details on agenda, check out the document below:

Below are some of the comments in the words of the early-stage researchers attending the event and of Prof. Mohsen Assadi from UIS:

AUTH Workshop Agenda

“Since modeling was the highlight of the workshop, both the company dealing with large scale CFD modelling and the combustion professor’s presentations were of high value giving a better understanding of how modeling can be used to enhance our understanding of possibilities and limitations of various ideas. The face-to-face meeting can never be replaced by alternative setups, but when not possible, the alternatives are also good 😊”

Prof. Mohsen Assadi, UIS

“It was a pleasure to be able to attend the NextMGT workshop 4 online. It was a well-designed workshop, and it would be useful to the ongoing research activities of the ESRs. The speakers at the workshop provided information on biofuel production, hydrogen production and storage, computational fluid dynamics, and considerations for condition-based maintenance of safety-critical gas turbines. As part of this event, I also had the opportunity to present my ongoing research. It was here that I interacted with speakers and answered their questions. It was a very worthwhile event for me personally and I enjoyed it very much. Bio2CHP company provided a brief overview of syngas production for MGTs, which was extremely interesting to me since it is closely related to my ongoing research project monitoring and diagnosing MGTs with different fuel compositions, such as syngas, LNG, and hydrogen. The information provided by Mr. Dimitrios Mertzis was very relevant to my work, and I am grateful for his assistance. I would like to express my gratitude to the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and the City University, London for their well-organized workshops. My sincere thanks go out to Prof. Anestis Kalfas for managing this event in such a manner that all ESRs were able to enjoy the event and learn new skills”

“The workshop had a very good overview of various aspects of power generation including topics – Power generation using biomass, production of green hydrogen and storage of hydrogen. Also, presentations from other ESRs were quite interesting touching all the segments of MGT systems. This has helped me to better understand where my research stands in the global energy scenario. Finally, I thank the organizers from AUTH for their efforts in making this event fruitful.”

Vinoth Kumar

“The three days’ workshop in Thessaloniki has been very useful to see how research ideas can become a reality with a lot of effort and good work. I have been impressed by the concept of Bio2CHP since I live in a place full of olive and grape groves. I look forward to seeing how it goes from prototype to commercial product. Finally, I must congratulate the team at AUTH for the organisation of the workshop”

Antonio Escamilla Perejon

“I particularly liked presentations from ESRs this time: presenting face-to-face your work to the other members of the consortium gives not only the possibility of practicing but also of keeping track of your progress, since you meet the same audience each few months. I found it very fruitful to have presentations and the discussions from companies. Moreover, since my main focus was on CFD, I enjoyed presentations from Beta where we got in touch with a vibrant young reality which is becoming more and more predominant in the market. It was really lovable to experience the university life in Thessaloniki with a vibrant environment and high student participation. Professors were on point as well and I really liked their presentations, especially the one on CFD and combustion in which Greece has a strong tradition.  Food was great! The moonrise over the city caught my attention

“It has been very nice to attend the presentation from Bio2CHP on Biomass, and to realize the big potential of this technology. In order for this technology to gain importance though, several challenges have to be faced. It has been really impressive to see the platform and set of tools that BETA provides to their customers and engineering students. Finally, I had the chance to get up to date with the work of the other ESRs. Even though the research topics are diverse from one another, it has been very helpful to see the different methodologies applied by other ESRs. Some presentations gave me ideas that I will try to apply to my topic. It was great to have the opportunity to see meet the supervisors and the other ESRs, it has been very pleasant to exchange some words and have some interesting discussions about both personal and technical grounds.”

Filippo Faldella

“During the workshop all the ESRs had the opportunity to present their work. Because of that, I had the possibility to have a better understanding about different aspects related to micro gas turbines. In addition to that, presenting the work to other researchers and supervisors gave me the chance to improve my presenting skills and to receive constructive feedbacks. The topics fit very well with what I currently work on, because now I have a better understanding on the other ESR work. On top of that, many presentations from external presenters were very well linked to my research topic, such the presentations about hydrogen storage and biogas run micro gas turbines. I am very grateful that we had the chance to meet again in person. For sure, this made all the sessions more interactive. It was also a great opportunity for visiting Thessaloniki and enjoy the Greek food. ”

Martina Raggio, UNIGE

“During the workshop in AUTH I learnt about current innovations in turbomachinery and cycles. I had the opportunity to see a variety of presentations from Greek industry as well as academia. I was able to have more insight about other ESR’s topics which I found very interesting. Thanks to this event, I have a more concrete plan about my next steps in my PhD.  As I am working on heat exchanger design I plan to use BETA CAE Systems software in my simulations. Furthermore, I really liked the technical presentation about an externally fired micro-gas turbine using biomass as well as BETA presentations. It was very pleasant to connect with my colleagues in person.  Despite the warm early September days, I enjoyed walking in sunny Thessaloniki and tasted delicious Greek food. I look forward to the next event in London.”

Panagiota Chatzi

“First of all, it was very nice that we met again in person in such a nice place like Thessaloniki. It was quite interesting to see everyone’s progress and find out potential collaborations. Furthermore, the companies which joined the event provided us with a lot of information on the research that we do. I would like to inform you that I am setting up a collaboration with BETA CAE regarding my project. Generally, I have a positive feeling about this workshop, and I am looking forward the next one.”

Konstantinos Eleftheriou

“I was looking forward to this workshop, and Prof. Kalfas did a fabulous job of organising the workshop. To begin with, it was great to attend the presentations of the other ESRs to have more ideas and understanding about their work which gives you a certain perspective to look forward to and ideas for possible collaboration. Also, it was my first time presenting my work and received such interesting feedback and comments which I was looking forward to. The presentations from the other speakers from Industries and academia were also comprehensive especially by BETA CAE Systems as it was well detailed about the usage of the software and its applications mainly the part with ANSA & META. I have learned certain new things about computational methods, power generation from biomass and green hydrogen production. None of which is directly related to my work now but surely it could be explored in future to be included in my system dynamics modelling. It’s always though- provoking to have in-person conversations with other ESRs and their respective supervisors as obviously the exchange of thoughts and ideas is so facile in person same in the case of the other speakers as I noticed I could engage more with the presentation where the speakers were present physically though I understand it’s not possible in all cases. So overall I really enjoyed the way the workshop unfolded. I am looking forward to next winter school in London.”
