NEXTMGT- EARLY STAGE RESEARCHERS
The Early Stage Researchers of the NextMGT project have been assigned; the three missing ones are awaiting visas to start their roles. Below is a short biography of each ESR.
ESR 1: JODY ANFOSSI
Jody Anfossi was born and raised in Milan, Italy. In 2019 he obtained a MSc in Aeronautical Engineering between Politecnico di Milano and Beihang University (Beijing, China). After his experience as engineer in an Italian airline company, today Jody is hosted at City University of London as an Early Stage Researcher focusing on innovations in micro gas turbines for aircraft propulsion. He believes that the sustainability of aircraft powerplant systems will play a key role in the future of the aviation market and to be an ESR could contribute to aerospace technological development at a leading and impactful level.
ESR 2: ANTONIO ESCAMILLA PEREJÓN
Antonio Escamilla Perejón, was born in Seville, Spain. His research project title is “Innovative energy storage concepts based on power-to-power (P2P) solutions using micro gas turbines”. He obtained a BEng in Energy Engineering, specialized in turbomachinery and thermal power generation, at the University of Seville in 2016. After that, he obtained a MSc in Thermal Power (Gas Turbine Option) in 2018 at Cranfield University, United Kingdom. His area of research during his studies has been Thermodynamic Cycles and Turbomachinery design for supercritical CO2 as working fluid. Following this achievement, he has worked as a Turbomachinery Software Developer for 2 years and half at Advanced Design Technology in London (UK).
His main hobby is sports. He really enjoys practicing both cycling and tennis. He is also a supporter from Real Betis Balompié, a football team from “La Liga”.
ESR 3: ANGELOS GAITANIS
Angelos Gaitanis comes from the town of Kozani which is in the north region of Greece. His position in the NextMGT project mainly deals with cycle innovations and optimization. More specifically, his role is to research for the optimal micro gas turbine operation for alternative cycles with the use of an in-house dynamic model. Angelos is extremely happy to work in such a project, exchange ideas with the other researchers and meet the challenges in the field of micro gas turbine technology. His extra-curricular activities involve hiking as he adores exploring forests and mountain landscapes.
ESR 4: RAVI NATH TIWARI
Ravi Nath Tiwari is of Indian nationality, and holds the NextMGT project ‘Investigation of MGT system configuration for compact lightweight application’ at University of Genova Italy. He obtained his engineering (B.Tech) and master degree (M.Tech) in Electrical & Electronics and Quality Management stream from Indian University UPTU, Lucknow and BITS Pilani respectively. After his bachelor’s study he was associated with various companies i.e. Enercon, SGS, TUV-R, and completed more than 600MW renewable energy projects (wind & Solar) in various state of India. After a long experience he moved to France for the master qualification in Electrical Energy System (EES) stream with specialization in New Technologies of Energy (NTE). He obtained his master’s Internship in Laplace laboratory Toulouse France and focused on the life cycle analysis, microgrid and hydrogen production solution. He always interested to work in low emission field to reduction of GHG emission.
He is interested in studying spiritual & technical books, visiting new places, and participating in social work.
ESR 5: KONSTANTINOS ELEFTHERIOU
Konstantinos Eleftheriou is an Early Stage Researcher at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki investigating novel turbomachinery designs for the next generation of micro Gas Turbines. Previously, Konstantinos worked as a wind tunnel engineer at the 10’x5’ Wind Tunnel at Imperial College London where he focused on various experimental techniques. He graduated from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki with Dipl-Ing in mechanical engineering and completed an MSc in Advanced Aeronautical Engineering at Imperial College London.
ESR 6: REYHANEH BANIHABIB
Reyhaneh received her BSc and MSc degrees in mechanical engineering, thermo-fluid science and energy conversion, from University of Tehran in 2011 and 2013, respectively. After graduation, she joined the R&D department of MAPNA Turbine Engineering and Manufacturing Co. (TUGA), where she worked as a gas turbine design engineer till 2020. During those years, her works mainly focused on gas turbine secondary air system aerodynamics and heat transfer, gas turbine thermodynamic cycle and performance diagnostics. She was involved in the upgrade and design of the turbine section and secondary air system in different MAPNA product development projects, such as upgrading two MAPNA gas turbines and developing MAPNA F-class gas turbine. In 2020, she joined the University of Stavanger as a PhD student in the NextMGT project. In this project, she works on the development of real-time smart data analytic tools for monitoring and optimum operation of MGT systems.
ESR 7: FILIPPO FALDELLA
Filippo Faldella, is from Bologna (Italy). In 2017, he graduated with a Bachelor of science in mechanical engineering from the University of Bologna. He continued my studies in the Netherlands where I obtained a Master degree at the Delft University of Technology in 2020. During his Masters, he specialized in process and energy technologies. As part of his thesis project, Filippo stufied the flashback phenomenon in high hydrogen content premixed turbulent flames. His research topic in the NextMGT project is “Combustion performance and emissions of unconventional fuel”. He will be working at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) and pursuing his studies as a PhD candidate at ETH Zurich. The main goal of the project is to investigate advanced combustion technologies so that low emissions and fuel flexibility can be achieved.
ESR 8: PIETRO PAGANI
Pietro Pagani, born in Colleferro (Italy), is a PhD student at the Thermodynamics and Fluid mechanics division of “Université Catholique de Louvain”.
He obtained a BS in Aerospace Engineering and a MSc degree in Space and Astronautical Engineering from “La Sapienza” University of Rome. In the context of his master thesis project he joined the “Von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics” and, after the graduation, he was appointed as Research Fellow in the Aeronautic and Aerospace department working on hypersonic re-entry flows and in-depth material response. Being concerned about the transition towards sustainable energy he joined the NextMGT project, his actual doctoral position focuses on “high fidelity CFD simulation of flameless combustion in micro gas turbine operating with alternative fuels”.
ESR 9: VINOTH KUMAR ARUMUGAM
Vinoth Kumar Arumugam, born in Chennai (India), is a PhD student at the Computational Fluid Dynamics Group of “Paul Scherrer Institut PSI” under the ETH domain. He obtained his MSc in Aerospace Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology Madras. He has a strong research experience in gas turbine combustor characterisation using advanced laser diagnostic techniques and published several papers in the top peer-reviewed journals. He joined the ITN-NextMGT team as a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Early Stage Researcher (ESR) to work on the combustion of low calorific value fuels. He believes that the commercialization of Micro-Gas Turbine is vital in establishing more flexible and sustainable energy demands of the future.
ESR 10: AHMAD ABUHAIBA
Ahmad Abuhaiba was born in Palestine. His research work is within Work-Package 3 (WP3), being ESR10, whose project title is “Optimization of MGT power electronics, high speed electrical machines and control systems” at City University of London, United Kingdom. He obtained a BEng in Mechanical Engineering at the Islamic University of Gaza in 2019. In the context of his bachelor, he spent the last year at the University of Glasgow (Scotland) as part of the Erasmus Exchange Programme. He has worked as a researcher in the field of solar energy within a research project which is carried out through collaboration between the University of Birmingham and Islamic University of Gaza. He loves hiking, traveling and history.
ESR 11: PATTY CHATZI
Patty Chatzi comes from Greece. She received her diploma in mechanical engineering from AUTH and has an MSc in Marine Engineering from NTUA. She went to the UK to gain experience in composite materials doing an MSc by research in Cranfield University. She has worked in Collins Aerospace for 7 years developing new composite aerospace components. In this project she is in AUTH, investigating advanced materials used in hybrid MGT systems.
ESR 12: MARTINA RAGGIO
Martina Raggio is from Italy and is now at the University of Genoa. The title of her project is “Innovative energy storage concepts based on the smart integration of micro gas turbine systems with electrochemical and thermal energy storage devices”.
Before starting her PhD project, she has lived in the UK for almost 3 years.
First, in Cranfield where she did an MSc course in Thermal Power, as
part of a double degree programme in conjunction with the University of Genoa. Then, in Derby where she has worked at Rolls-Royce as an Engine Environmental Protection Engineer. At Rolls-Royce, Martina was involved on projects related to the studies of the behaviour of turbofan engines during the ingestion of atmospheric agents. Her work mainly focused on the modelling of ice formation and its effects on engine performance.
Her main hobbies are playing tennis and practising yoga.
ESR 13: GIUSEPPE TILOCCA
Giuseppe Tilocca, comes from Sardinia (Italy). He will be taking the a role at the University of Seville, that will involve investigating the commercialization and development of the gas turbine market in Europe. His academic background is Aerospace Engineering (MSc at Polytechnic of Turin) and Thermal Power (MSc at Cranfield University). After his studies, he worked for several years as a Turbomachinery Design Engineer for a consultancy company in London. Moreover, he co-founded and worked almost two years as CTO for a London fintech startup that managed investments in arts as a means to fund emerging artists. Giuseppe loves practising sports that connect his with nature such as windsurfing, sailing, freediving, snowboarding and mountain biking. He has also practised martial arts for many years.
ESR 14: HASAN HUSEYIN USLU
Hasan Huseyin Uslu is from Turkey. He will be involved in developing innovative techno-economic analysis tools for MGT systems at University of Stavanger.
Hr studied Mechanical Engineering at Istanbul Technical University. Afterwards, he had 5 years of experience in the energy industry with the responsibilities such as energy trading, energy market analysis and optimization of power plants. Meanwhile, he has completed an MBA program at Galatasaray University.
He loves travelling and learning new cultures. Besides, he likes to spend time doing sports like cycling, jogging, swimming.
